A PENDE PALM WINE CUP

In the southwestern part of the Congo live the Pende people, who settled here at the beginning of the 17th century, migrating from Angola. Pende artists are known for traditional masks associated with initiation rituals. Previously, masks were worn during masquerades - ceremonies of renewal and strengthening of communities. At such events, large quantities of raffia wine, a plant from the palm family, were always drunk. The alcoholic drink was poured into wooden bowls like this one.
