A TOKI ADZE, MANGAIA ISLAND, COOK ISLANDS

An early nineteenth century chief’s ceremonial adze or Toki from Mangaia in the Cook Islands. It has a carved circular shaft on a round base of pillars with a fine stone head bound by sennit cord to shaft. These ceremonial adzes represented gods or spirits.
