A POVAI TONGA ISLANDS CLUB
Provenance: Patrick Mesthdag
The Tongans, who were big men, favoured heavy paddle and pole clubs, such as the Povai, a baseball-shaped club, but longer and heavier. These weapons were usually decorated with the most intricate and delicate geometric engraving, often covering the whole surface of the club. Also this club is completely covered with carved traditional geometric patterns.
