A SAKALAVA BIRD FIGURE
- The Sakalava are the most diverse and dispersed of the peoples of Madagascar, spread out
on almost the entire western coast, the result of a number of royal dynasties and kingdoms.
The Sakalava bury their dead far from the villages and in the forest.
Representations of human effigies, but also of large birds symbolizing the soul, as here,
are sculpted to decorate the corners and sides of the graves.
