A PAIR OF BRONZE OGBONI SOCIETY CEREMONIAL ANKLETS

Provenance: Private Collection Loed van Bussel, Amsterdam

Human faces on all four sides demonstrates the importance of the person for whom they were made and the importance as ritual objects. Anklets such as those here were reserved for the exclusive use of members of the aristocracy, and were worn at the introduction or the funeral of a king or a leader. They are among the finest examples of old-style Yoruba metalwork.
What is nice that the pair of anklets is indeed a pair. They have a beautiful patina and their age is significant. Each anklet has eight faces and it has ring bells on every corner. On the back they are signed by Loed van Bussel.
