Provenance: Private collection Haarlem, The Netherlands

Sculptures like this are carved from a single piece of wood and painted bright in ochre colours. They are called ‘Nggwalndu’ (means Ancestor spirit) and are kept in the impressive ritual houses (Haus Tambaran). They play an important role in initiation rituals and must not be seen by women or children! The efficacy of Abelam sculptures lies in the bright polychrome paints applied to their surfaces. For the Abelam paint is a magical substance that endows the figures with supernatural power and beauty.
