Provenance: Sammlung Markert, München, Herman Seeger, Stuttgart.

This old Food Pounder from the Middle Sepik Area was used for smashing taro root into a pudding. The finial is in the form of a pig’s head. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, it has a deep dark patina from years of use and being stored in a smokey house.  Old pounders like this one were family heirlooms passed down through generations.
