Gable sculptures that were representations of birds were particulary prevalent on the ceremonial houses of the Central Sepik River valley which were exclusively used by initiated men.
These sculptures were considered as a ”guardian” of the ceremonial house. He is on the lookout for the arrival of potential enemies.
