Among Dinka herders in the Sudan, headrests are considered status symbols. These portable pillows are carved from the fork of a tree and may be ornamented with relief carving, metal and other decorative materials. The Dinka artist who carved this headrest transformed the extensions of the crescent-shaped neck support into stylized animal heads and the vertical supports into abstract legs.
