A COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE BRASS LIME CONTAINERS (SIRIH)

These brass containers were used to carry lime, an essential part of the betel quid. They were used in Palembang, South Sumatra, where the influence of the long standing and prosperous Chinese community is evident in local decorative arts. These boxes are elaborately and particularly finely cast all over with floral and pendant betel (sirih) leaf motifs. Betel and all its accoutrements are important requisites in demonstrating a person’s hospitality.  A brass box with lacquered decoration was used to impress.
